The NY Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) was established in New York State in 1989
in cooperation with the NYS Public Service Commission and the NY Telecommunications
Industry. The establishment of the intrastate relay service enabled communications for the
hearing impaired and/or speech impaired individuals who must use non voice terminals i.e.
text telephone.
Since July 1997 the telecommunications industry has had a contractual agreement with Sprint
Communications, Inc. which currently operates the NY Relay Service and the Targeted
Accessibility Fund of York, Inc (TAF) administers this service on behalf of the industry.
